Pediatric Eye Exams
It is recommended that children start eye exams at as young as 6 months old, and see a doctor regularly in their youth even if not experiencing vision loss in order to monitor for important conditions.

What to Know About Pediatric Eye Exams
Did you know that eye exams are recommended for children as young as 6 months old?
The American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends children have eye exams at 6 months, 1 year, and school ages in order to best detect and correct vision conditions such as strabismus and amblyopia.
Strabismus is a condition where the eyes are misaligned and may turn in or out. While strabismus does not always lead to poor vision, if the eye is deprived from clear visual stimulus for much of a person’s life, vision never fully develops to its full potential. This condition of reduced vision is called amblyopia. In order to minimize and prevent the affects of amblyopia, glasses and surgical operations can provide children with aligned eyes with clear vision.
Did you know school eye screenings are not the same as eye exams?
While school nurses and health centers provide a critical role in identifying students in need of vision correction, the AOA has cited that standard school screenings can miss up to 75% of vision issues. Studies have shown poor vision can directly correlate to worsened academic performance as well as decreased literacy proficiency and social abilities.
